This is a Lorenz strange attractor It is notable for having chaotic solutions for certain initial conditions.
The lorenz system was developed to describe a two dimensional fluid layer that is being warmed from below and cooled from above. x is proportional to the rate of convection, y to the horizontal temperature variation, and z to the vertical temperature variation.
